Eschatos is a vertically scrolling shoot’em up. Some time in the year 22nd century the moon gets covered by a strange organic matter of alien origin, named Purple Erosion. Aliens then start to invade Earth from the moon and the player has to fight back.
There are 2 two main game modes; Original and Advanced, as well as Time Attack. The game has a heavy focus on scoring. The player’s ship has two different attacks: a fairly strong straight shot and a wide shot that is less powerful and limited in range, but it can destroy enemies to the sides of the ship. Additionally there is a frontal shield which can absorb enemy fire, but is limited by a power bar which only recharges when the shield is not in use. The shield can also be used offensively by hovering it over enemies.
In Original mode there is only one type of pick-up, the Flash-Item (also called F-Bomb), which is delivered in a small container that has to be shot to release the pick-up. When the player picks up the item all smaller enemies and enemy bullets are destroyed, and bigger enemies get damaged. In Advanced mode there is also a yellow version of the Flash-Item, which does the same, but also changes the enemy bullets into purple score items which the player can collect. On top of that there is a Power-Up item in Advanced mode which increases the shot strength, lowers the max shield amount, and increases the score multiplier by one. The yellow Flash-Item acts as a reverse to this too, lowering the shot strength, raising the shield amount and subtracting one from the score multiplier. 1-UP items are dropped periodically as well.
Scoring is mainly based on destroying every enemy of a wave and doing so as fast as possible. Destroying all enemies of a wave increases the score multiplier, and killing them faster will result in a bigger wave bonus. There are also 7 hidden Wonderwitch score pick-ups throughout the game, which are revealed by shooting certain spots in the levels. The faster these are picked up the more points you get, and successive Wonderwitches give more points as well. The score you get from them also is multiplied by the score multiplier. In Advanced mode you also have the yellow Flash-Items cancelling bullets into score items, which has to be balanced with the fact that using those will decrease your multiplier.
Time Attack is basically the same as Original, but instead of lives there is a time limit which starts at 90 seconds and gets refilled after each area (each stage has multiple areas).
All of these modes can be played in one of 4 difficulties, Easy, Normal, Hard, or Hardest, as well as Endless, which starts at Easy, then after beating the final boss restarts at Normal, and so on, until looping on Hardest forever (until all lives are lost). The view is not restricted to a typical top-down 2D mode, as the perspective often changes.
Included are also ports of Judgement Silversword: Rebirth Edition and Cardinal Sins. Both games were originally made for the WonderSwan Color handheld by Bandai.
